Welcome To Crosby Street, Tess Giberson
4 May 2011, 4:46 pm

Following a five-year break from her own label, Tess Giberson has re-entered the fashion scene and steadily ramped up her presence in New York. For Fall, she showed her collection on models, not mannequins, and tomorrow, her first-ever store bows on Soho’s Crosby Street. “It’s a street that I’ve always particularly liked,” Giberson says. “The pace of it is nice; it’s right on the edge of Soho, but it has a very calm feeling when you walk down the street.”

Calm is the word for the store’s airy, pared-down interiors, which nicely fit the label’s smart-minimal aesthetic. “I really wanted to maintain a lot of the natural characteristics of the space,” Giberson tells Style.com, pointing out the exposed brick and the original wooden ceiling. “It’s mixing together the rawness of the natural space with the new.”

Her clothes will share the floor with an installation by artist Carol Bove, whose sculptures were also featured in Giberson’s Spring ‘10 presentation. Giberson will also carry pieces by jeweler Ninh Wysocan, with whom she has worked since launching her collection, as well as special items from her own label that won’t be sold elsewhere. “I’d like to do things more spontaneously,” she says. Calm spontaneity’s got a brand-new address.

Tess Giberson opens tomorrow at 97 Crosby St., NYC, www.tessgiberson.com.
