Victorian Style "School Marm"

I've been doing some research lately...inspiration for an upcoming shoot.  The theme is a vintage country school girl look.  During my hunt for ideas, I found these fabulous Victorian inspired dresses by Rodarte.  While this particular look is not right for my current shoot,  I think the outfits are very interesting none the less.  I love the collars and the details.  While Victorian "school marm" is not exactly a streetwear option for most women, the look would be great for a fashion editorial.  What do you think?

My Favorite!

Rusch Hour: Toasting Montauk's New "Summer Camp"
31 May 2011, 8:11 pm

With its fishing village roots, robust surf scene, and long association with art world figures like Andy Warhol, Montauk has always been the cooler alternative to the Hamptons—and while some may grumble that the place is becoming too popular, it still stands safely apart from its over-gentrified neighbors along Route 27. One of the attractions of Ruschmeyer’s, a newly renovated “summer camp” from Ben Pundole, formerly of the Mondrian Hotel Group, and Rob McKinley, who opened the nearby Surf Lodge a few summers ago, is that it fits right in with the area’s laid-back mood. It features a rustic lakefront setting, a ring of casual but stylishly appointed guest cabins, and a restaurant where Pundole and McKinley have partnered with the team behind lower Manhattan’s Fat Radish to put a focus on fish and other locally sourced ingredients (don’t miss the clam pizza if it’s on the list of nightly specials). The property also houses a nautically themed late-night hangout, the Electric Eel (below), which could put a serious crimp in your early-morning surfing plans. For those who insist on exercise, there are yoga sessions, a rack of handsome bikes, and, more essentially, a massage room, among other options. Ruschmeyer’s opened over Memorial Day weekend with a friends-and-family gathering that included a Saturday night dinner attended by Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, Rogan Gregory, Pamela Love, Magnus Berger, and Tenzin Wild. After the meal, Waris Ahluwalia stepped outside to take a call with his newest collaborators, the alternative hip-hop group Chiddy Bang. For an upcoming movie role, the jeweler and actor is adding the title of rapper to his résumé.

For reservations and more info, see www.visitruschmeyers.com or call (631) 668-2885.

Francisco's Picks: The Calvin Klein Creative Director's Favorite Photos From Tomorrow's Photographers For Friends Benefit Auction
31 May 2011, 7:00 pm

Tomorrow night, Friends in Deed, a New York-based crisis center for those dealing with life-threatening illnesses and their caregivers, holds its annual benefit auction, Photographers for Friends. Photos by modern masters such as Diane Arbus, Patrick Demarchelier, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Nan Goldin, and Robert Mapplethorpe will go on the block to support the center’s programs.

Among the offerings? A nearly life-sized Gisele, for one. Gilles Bensimon’s 4′ by 5-1/3′ shot of the Brazilian supermodel is one of the favorites of photography collector (and, of course, Calvin Klein Collection creative director) Francisco Costa, who shared his top picks from the offerings exclusively with Style.com. Classics like Louise Dahl-Wolfe’s Mary Sykes with Postcards, Puerto Rico, 1938 and Arbus’ Transvestite After Her Birthday Party, NYC from 1969, as well as more contemporary prints, like Three Drowning Ladies (below) by David Needleman (a former assistant of Steven Meisel’s), which Costa calls “brilliant,” and Gary Schneider’s Carly’s Legs from 2006 (”this one is really great,” bottom) also impressed the designer. And the late, great Elizabeth Taylor—in a shot from the set of Suddenly Last Summer in 1959 (below)—caught Costa’s eye, too.

And about Gisele, what is there to say that hasn’t been said already? Costa summed it up nicely: “Amazing.”

The Photographers for Friends cocktails and auction is held tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Phillips de Pury & Company, 450 Park Ave., NYC. For tickets, contact (800) 996-5433 or mcohen@friendsindeed.org.

A Peek At Carine's Chanel Campaign, Travel Tips From World Wide Waris, The Sartorial Stars Of The Silver Screen Hit The Block, And More…

You never know what you’re going to get when you step inside a photo booth—but if you’re decked out in Chanel, and styled by Carine Roitfeld, as Freja is in the new Chanel campaign, odds are, the results will be pretty good. [Fashionologie]

House of Waris designer Waris Ahluwalia—”not a lady who lunches,” he says, “but very very comfortable with ladies who do”—picks out his favorite lunch spots across the globe, for his fellow world-travelers. (Also: New York’s most historic toothpaste shop?) [Telegraph]

Marilyn Monroe’s infamous white “subway grate” dress will get one final act on June 18. The dress, along with thousands of Hollywood’s most iconic costumes owned by Debbie Reynolds, is set to hit the auction block this June. The Marilyn dress is expected to blow away the rest of the items, at an estimated $1 to $2 million; challenging it for the top spot are Judy Garland’s red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, Audrey Hepburn’s ascot gown from My Fair Lady, and Charlie Chaplin’s signature bowler hat. [WSJ.]

A rare treat for packrats: A giant new exhibition of Louis Vuitton trunks (including some dating all the way back to 1854) will open at China’s National Museum, now the world’s largest, on Monday. [WWD]

One of the world's most beautiful women is a cross-dresser. At least for one photoshoot.

A certain actress dresses up as silent film star Buster Keaton in the latest issue of W Magazine. Who is it? It wouldn't be any fun if we came out and told you, would it?

Study the photos below, try to imagine this subject with large breasts, a form-fitting dress and far different makeup. Then, click on either of the pictures for the answer. Good luck!!!

The Kids Are All Right?
31 May 2011, 3:12 pm

Is Diane von Furstenberg the latest designer to think small? The designer is reportedly moving forward with a long-rumored collection for GapKids and Baby Gap, which insiders say could bow as early as Spring 2012. (In addition to her main collection of ready-to-wear and accessories, DVF also makes fine jewelry with H.Stern, recently debuted housewares under her own label, and will return this fall to the fragrance world with Diane, her first new scent in years.)

But von Furstenberg is only the latest to take on the kiddie market. Former GapKids collaborator Stella McCartney received such good response from her children’s collection for the retailer that she’s since created a junior collection under her own label. In the past year, several other major houses have done the same. Gucci and Fendi both debuted childrenswear at last season’s Pitti Bimbo, part of the Pitti Immagine fairs. And earlier this month, Lanvin announced that it will return to its roots (founder Jeanne Lanvin designed mommy-and-me pieces) with a new kids’ range, launching in November.

Tao And Her Fellow Top Models Sell the Clothes Off Their Backs for Japan
27 May 2011, 5:39 pm

Tao Okamoto was in Tokyo visiting family when the 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit the country back in March. A few days later, the Japanese top model sent out a heartfelt letter to friends and fashion industry contacts expressing her sympathy for victims and her intent to plan a benefit: “I want to tell Japan that a lot of people in the world are encouraging and helping us. We are not alone.” This Sunday, Tao makes good on that promise with Ragtag, a charity bazaar she’s hosting in the basement of Saturdays Surf in Soho. Runway regulars like Heidi Mount, Liu Wen, and Jenny Shimizu, along with Phillip Lim, Pamela Love, and Visionaire’s Cecilia Dean, will sell pre-loved clothes straight from their own closets to benefit the organization Save Japan! Items up for grabs include Naomi Campbell-signed T-shirts from her Fashion for Relief charity show in Cannes and, presumably, piles of sample-size togs and designer swag.

Ragtag will take place Sunday, May 29, from 12-6 p.m. at the basement of Saturdays Surf NYC, 31 Crosby St., www.saturdaysnyc.com. For more information on Ragtag, visit www.savejapanproject.org.

Team Dolce Vs. Team Pucci: Which Side Are You On?
27 May 2011, 5:08 pm

In the celebrity dressing stakes, two houses have come out on top this spring: Dolce & Gabbana and Emilio Pucci. There was something about the almost all-white, hope chest-inspired collection of the former and the bohemian Grecian vibe of the latter that made them irresistible to A-listers and their stylists. We’re chalking it up to the fact that Messieurs Dolce and Gabbana and Pucci’s Peter Dundas specialize in the sort of va-va-voom, take-no-prisoners silhouettes that the paparazzi—especially the tuxedo-clad paparazzi at the Cannes Film Festival—live for. But what’s your take on the subject?

Jay Ahr's Embroidered Tale
27 May 2011, 4:12 pm

It was practically a bestiary at London’s Couture Lab boutique and gallery yesterday. Swarovski-sprinkled monkey skulls, a gold-beaded buffalo, and a fiery coral sea spider were just some of the haute experiments in embroidery that Jay Ahr designer Jonathan Riss presented at Evolution, an exhibition of 14 tapestries crafted from such unusual materials as turquoise, mandrille shells, and sequins. Riss creates both ready-to-wear and eveningwear, but he’s best known for the latter, often detailed with the kind of intricate embroidery on display here. “I’m the kind of person that likes to keep all of my treasures in a little box. But with these tapestries, I thought, if I can put them out in public, why not?” said the designer, who was in town from Paris not only for the opening of his show, but to shoot a new campaign featuring Poppy Delevingne.

It was art, not fashion, that was on display last night, but that didn’t stop the style set from stopping by. The campaign’s creative director, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, spent most of her evening admiring Riss’ marble elephant skeleton. “I want the campaign to be quite glamorous, young, and fun,” Roitfeld said, tugging at her vintage Helmut Lang blazer. “I don’t want to tell you what to expect because I want it to be a surprise!” added the campaign’s stylist, Mélanie Huynh. On deck for the stylist for the rest of the summer? A trip to Corsica, where she’ll go “hippie chic,” she said, in Pucci, Altuzarra, and Isabel Marant.

“Projects like these are a great way to nurture new creativity,” said Couture Lab’s founder, Carmen Busquets, of Riss’ exhibition. “Couture Lab doesn’t do ‘fashions’ or ’seasons.’ I want to create a community where value and creativity are sustained.” Judging by her store, which, two years ago, launched as a pop-up extension of the Couture Lab Web site and has remained packed with handcrafted jewelry, hats, and homewares ever since, Busquets has done just that.

Just as the shop was emptying, a 16-year-old boy in a plum velvet tuxedo jacket passed by the storefront. “Did you do these, man? They’re sick!” he asked Riss, pointing to the tapestries in the window. The designer just smiled.

The CFDA Awards aren’t until June, but the first shots from the Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin-shot CFDA Journal, which profiles the nominees and honorees, debuted today. For the fourth year running, Trey Laird designed the journal, overseeing the photographers’ black-and-white shots of the likes of Marc Jacobs (Womenswear Designer of the Year nominee and Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, top), Lady Gaga (Fashion Icon Award honoree, above), and Alexander Wang (Womenswear Designer of the Year nominee, below).

Kimmel, Laing, Vaccarello, And More Among The 2011 ANDAM Prize Nominees
26 May 2011, 10:33 pm

ANDAM, the French organization devoted to the development of young fashion talent, announced its six finalists for its annual award today, and it’s an international bunch of up-and-comers—some better known than others. Adam Kimmel (a look from whose Fall ‘11 men’s collection is above, right), Anthony Vaccarello, Commuun, Jeremy Laing (a look from whose Fall ‘11 collection is above, left), Matthew Harding, and Yiqing Yin will go head-to-head in Paris at the end of June. Up for grabs is a €200,000 prize, courtesy of the National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts, and a yearlong mentorship by Ralph Toledano, formerly of Chloé. Like previous winners Hakaan Yildirim, Giles Deacon, and Gareth Pugh, the designer who takes the prize is obligated to set up operations in France. I’ll be sitting on the jury with, among others, Toledano, Hilary Alexander, Emmanuelle Alt, Sarah Lerfel, Humberto Leon, and ANDAM founder Nathalie Dufour next month. Stay tuned for the blow-by-blow.

Andrea Dellal Gives Back—With An Epic Party, Naturally
26 May 2011, 8:49 pm

The Brazil Foundation gala won’t be until the fall, but the buzz began yesterday night at Fatima Otero’s marvelous town house in the West Village. Olivier Theyskens, Shala Monroque, Adam Lippes, Luigi Tadini, and more were there to celebrate the gala’s just-announced honoree, Andrea Dellal. Dellal (above left), the London-based social and matriarch of the large Dellal clan—her daughters are Charlotte Olympia designer Charlotte Dellal and model Alice Dellal; her son, Alex Dellal, runs the iPad magazine POST—is one of the most visible Brazilians on the social scene. After so many years living outside her country, Dellal said, it was time to give it back. “Brazil is a rich country, but the gap is still huge between the upper and lower class,” she explained. “It’s time to join forces, between all of us, and give back to those who need most.” One way to give, of course, is by buying a ticket to the September 19 event, which takes place at the New York Public Library. Expect plenty of Valentino: label heavy and jewelry designer Carlos de Souza (above center, with Otero, right) is doing the list this year, and the house is co-sponsoring the event. A hot list of Brazilian artists will be donating art to be auctioned, too. Last year’s $2.5 million raised could even be topped this year—especially if, as last year, Brazil’s most visible fashion plate, Gisele, takes to the mic to sell the dress off her back.

To find out more and purchase tickets, visit www.brazilfoundation.org.
